Psychosocial impact of malocclusion in adolescents

Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by significant physical and social changes, during which appearance plays a crucial role in social acceptance. Malocclusion, characterized by discrepancies in the growth of the maxilla and mandible, can lead to both aesthetic and functional impairments that negatively affect quality of life. This literature review qualitatively assesses the psychosocial impacts of malocclusion in adolescents. A systematic search was conducted in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), and PubMed databases, focusing on publications from 2014 to 2024 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The keywords "psychosocial impact", "adolescents" and "malocclusion" were used, connected by Boolean operator "AND". A total of 157 articles were initially identified; 12 met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Findings indicate that malocclusion significantly influences adolescents' social and academic lives, contributing to mental health challenges such as decreased self-esteem, reduced self-confidence, and social isolation. The stigma associated with dental irregularities exacerbates these difficulties, impairing interpersonal relationships. The multifactorial nature of the psychosocial impacts highlighted the need for an interdisciplinary approach to to effectively address malocclusion. In conclusion, the evidence underscores the importance of integrating psychological support with orthodontic care to mitigate the adverse effects of malocclusion on adolescents' well-being
