Introduction: Gambling has grown exponentially in recent decades, as well as concerns about its impact on public health. Sleep is a complex regulation process that can affect and be affected by different biological, psychological and sociological variables, being increasingly recognized as a potentially modifiable health risk factor. Both sleep and gambling are of increasing scientific interest. Objective: To explore the associations between sleep and gambling. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using the PubMed database and selecting real-world gambling data. Results: There are correlations between gambling variables (like severity) and sleep variables (like quality, sleepiness, and insomnia complaints). These association seem to be independent from other psychiatric conditions, but moderated by transdiagnostic parameters such as impulsivity. It is also suggested a severity continuum in the sleep and gambling relation. Conclusion: There is evidence suggesting correlation between gambling behavior and sleep impairment. Further insight into this relationship may leverage low-stigma sleep interventions as adjunct gambling interventions for the growing and socially asymmetric public gambling burden.
