Abstract

Suicide attempts have shown increasing rates in recent years. In view of the alarming numbers, the importance of reliable and constant studies and research on the topic is clear, as well as the identification of possible risk factors, thus facilitating the promotion of effective preventive policies. The objective of the current research was to carry out a integrative literature review, with the aim of investigating the thought patterns and beliefs of people who have attempted suicide. A search for references was carried out in the Periódicos CAPES, Scielo and Pubmed databases in July 2024. The search allowed the identification of 20 articles that met the established criteria. In view of the data analysis, it was possible to identify that females have a higher prevalence among the attempts, with an age range between 19 and 39 years old. With regard to thoughts and beliefs, the most prevalent feeling among people who attempted suicide, hopelessness was the most present, as well as, among a range of factors pointed out in the literature, another recurring factor was identified as presence of mental disorders. Therefore, it was concluded that even with a lack of studies focused on the thoughts and beliefs of this public, the feeling of hopelessness was prevalent.
