A diabetes mellitus e suas implicações no tratamento odontológico: Revisão de literatura

Diabetes mellitus é um distúrbio metabólico caracterizado pela presença de hiperglicemia crônica acompanhada em maior ou menor grau de alterações no metabolismo de carboidratos, proteínas e lipídios.Compromete várias partes do organismo humano, desde distúrbios visuais, nefropatias, comprometimento vascular periférico, redução da capacidade imunológica até manifestações bucais, entre outras. Este estudo trata-se de uma revisão de literatura, de natureza descritiva e de abordagem qualitativa, portanto, o levantamento bibliográfico foi realizado entre os meses de fevereiro a abril de 2023 com o uso de 33 artigos científicos recuperados na base de dados da Bibilioteca Brasileira de Odontologia, SciELO e MEDLINE. Os principais achados revelaram que pacientes com DM são propensos a desenvolver as formas mais graves de doenças periodontais com perda maior de inserção, maior sangramento gengival em relação à sondagem e reabsorção óssea mais elevada em comparação a paciente não diabéticos. Além disso, o cirurgião-dentista deve compreender os principais fatores que afetam o controle glicêmico, assim como possíveis interações medicamentosas, uso adequado de anestésicos e condutas que podem auxiliar na obtenção de um atendimento bem-sucedido com pacientes diabéticos.
