Considerações atuais sobre o uso dos cigarros eletrônicos relacionados às doenças periodontais: revisão da literatura

As doenças periodontais, gengivite e periodontite, são multifatoriais e muitas vezes imperceptíveis aos pacientes e cirurgiões-dentistas. O tabagismo é reconhecido como um importante fator de risco para o desenvolvimento dessas doenças interferindo diretamente no mecanismo inflamatório básico assim dificultando o diagnóstico. Esses dispositivos eletrônicos, foram introduzidos no mercado como alternativa para o cigarro tradicional, mas tornaram-se populares entre os jovens por serem aromatizados, atraentes e a falsa percepção de efeitos negativos à saúde. A atividade de cigarros eletrônicos vem sendo promovida como uma alternativa mais saudável, contudo não deve ser confundida com inofensivo. A literatura aponta que os agentes aromatizantes dos cigarros eletrônicos podem ter efeitos adversos semelhantes aos produtos do tabaco e que, assim como o tabagismo, aumentam as chances de riscos à periodontite, além de causar alterações pulmonares e cardiovasculares. Os pacientes fumantes de cigarros tradicionais e eletrônicos respondem menos favoravelmente ao tratamento periodontal não cirúrgico quando comparados aos não fumantes.
